An Amble Around Old Alloway is a 2 mile stroll around the historic village of Alloway that is steeped in the history of Robert Burns, the local bard. If you are arriving by car, then there is a National Trust car park in the centre of the village where the treasure trail starts and finishes. As this car park used to be a municipal car park for the village, there is an understanding with the National Trust that it can still be used for free by all!
This is a Sherlock Shenanigans trail, therefore it is a bit trickier and more challenging. It is not entirely suitable for prams and wheel chairs as it it involves uneven ground, narrow paths and steps. However, a slightly shorter (1.5 miles), alternative route is clearly marked in the booklet, providing access for wheels! The trails takes you around the village centre and will lead you through Poets Path, Burns Birthplace museum and gardens, Burns Monument Gardens, Alloway Parish Church, Auld Kirk and Old Railway line (not accessible for all). There are toilets within Burn Birthplace Museum and refreshments are available here or in the Poet’s Corner Cafe in the village centre!
The full trail should take about 2.5 – 3 hours. However, there are many places of interest along the route, where you may choose to linger and so extend your experience!
