A Dastardly Deed at Dumfries House – a Poirot Puzzle!

Horace Harbisher, the butler of Dumfries House, has been left for dead!  Who did the dastardly deed?

Horace Harbisher, the old butler of Dumfries House, has been found dazed, confused and very wet by the fountain in front of the house.  He cannot remember what happened but has managed to ‘chalk’ one word on the side of the fountain using a sharp stone.  Local Detective Inspector, Laura Norder, believes it may be a clue to Harbisher’s attacker.  A valuable painting has been taken off the wall in the Picture Gallery and there are signs of a struggle.  DI Norder thinks that Harbisher has disturbed a burglar and has been harmed while trying to intervene.  His watch has stopped – presumably at the time he was pushed into the fountain and close to the time of the crime!

Can you solve the clues and work out the word scribbled on the fountain?  DI Norder believes that this is some sort of code name and will lead to information of the attacker.  The clues will give you the name, age and address of the burglar and the time that the crime was committed!

Simply follow the clues around the estate from the start at the Visitor Centre, Dumfries House, Estate, A70,  Cumnock KA18 2NJ

There is no charge to enter the estate and no charge to park.  Should you wish to combine your trail with a visit to Dumfries House, then this must be pre-booked and paid for in advance.  There is also a small charge to enter the maize and an honest box to enter the walled gardens.

The trail is on hard surfaces: pavements, roads, and shingle paths.  Where there are steps, alternative routes have been suggested.  The trail should be entirely accessible for all.  Toilets, cafe and playpark are available near the Visitor Centre.

All the answers to each clue will give you an INCORRECT piece of information!  Simply cross it from the Answer sheet.  In a process of elimination, you will be left with the correct answers!  You will then be able to work out all of the answers above and then use the map to work out where the meeting took place!

It was a great day, I thoroughly enjoyed it, for more than the obvious reasons. ( the winner)  You are all a great bunch of people and ultimately the cause that money was being raised for is, most likely, dear to everyone’s hearts. Ultimately it is fundraising like this that helps push forward the treatments which in turn helps the people it will benefit the most.”    Collette Burns
