The Quandary of St Quivox – a Poirot Puzzle!

The Quandary of St Quivox is a 12 mile adventure that takes in the River Ayr Walkway, Auchincruive Estate, the village of St Quivox, Prestwick and Newtown shorelines and some interesting spaces in between! It is really intended to be done by bike but you could choose to walk. If so, then you probably need to double the amount of time recommended to complete the trail! The trail has two starting locations. The official one is on the riverside walk beside Ayshire College, Ayr Campus, Dam Park, Ayr KA8 0EU. Alternatively, you can choose to start at the Grangemuir Road end of the Esplanade, Prestwick KA9 1SN.

Strange, ghostly sightings have been spotted by several individuals in the graveyard of St Quivox Church.  This is a new phenomenon and local history does not record any similar, supernatural sightings. The sightings all report two adults and a child.  One of the adults chants a single word repeatedly that makes no apparent sense and the child appears to be clutching a wooden carving of some sort of animal.  A local historian, Professor Daemon Hunter, is trying to pull together as much information as possible to work out the individual identities of these ghosts and what their story might be.

Can you solve the clues and work out the names of the ghosts, the age of the child, what he/she is holding, what word is being chanted and beside whose grave do these sightings happen?  Each clue will let you eliminate one piece of information from a list at the back of the booklet!  Simply cross it off from the answer sheet.  In a process of elimination, you will be left with the correct answers!

Unfortunately, there are no public toilets available on the trail, but the map at the back of the booklet shows the nearest that can be accessed via a short detour!  There is an outdoor café at Auchincruive open at weekends only (summer) selling cakes and hot and cold drinks so best to pack a picnic!

It was a great day, I thoroughly enjoyed it, for more than the obvious reasons. ( the winner)  You are all a great bunch of people and ultimately the cause that money was being raised for is, most likely, dear to everyone’s hearts. Ultimately it is fundraising like this that helps push forward the treatments which in turn helps the people it will benefit the most.”    Collette Burns
